Jagannath University student commits suicide in Comilla by posting on Facebook

A student of Dhaka’s Jagannath University committed suicide at his village house in Comilla by posting on Facebook. The student named Fairuz Avantika was a 13th batch student of the law department of the university.

Fairuz committed suicide by hanging himself on a rope with a post on Facebook around 10 pm on Friday. Some of Fairuz’s friends said that he had accused a classmate of the university of various forms of harassment, including sexual harassment, in a Facebook post. In that post, he also accused an assistant proctor of misbehaving with the boy on behalf of the boy. Fairuz talked about suicide there. When his classmates called from Dhaka after seeing that post of Fairuz, the family members said that he had committed suicide. A person from the spot said that family members and some students of Jagannath University staying in Comilla rescued Fairuz while he was hanging and took him to the hospital. The doctors in charge declared him dead after the examination.

Fairuz’s body is in the Comilla Medical College morgue, said the officer in charge of Kotwali Model Police Station in Comilla. Firoz Hossain said. He told Prothom Alo that the student of the law department of Jagannath University had written a note before committing suicide. The police went to the hospital and the spot. The cause of death will be investigated.

When the news of Fairuz’s suicide spread in the campus, there was anger among the students. They started protesting in the campus. In this situation, the classmate of Fairuz was temporarily expelled from the university and the assistant proctor was relieved from his duties by the university administration.

The statement of the accused student was not available. However, the assistant proctor told Prothom Alo, “There is a conspiracy and an attempt is being made to frame me.” The incident was two-and-a-half years ago, when Avantika was lodged at the police station by her classmates for allegedly opening a fake account and posting various posts on Facebook. A committee was formed here to investigate the allegations. I never did anything alone with him.

Proctor of Jagannath University Jahangir Hossain said that a five-member committee has been formed to investigate the girl’s suicide and her complaint against her classmate and assistant proctor. He told Prothom Alo that the student was immediately expelled and the assistant proctor was dismissed on the orders of the vice-chancellor. If the university opens, action will be taken against them as per the rules.
